Counter-Strike co-creator Jess Cliffe has been arrested in Seattle for sexual exploitation of a child, reports suggest. Valve Corporation, his employer, has suspended his employment until further notice.
As reported by Kiro 7—a local Seattle news outlet—Cliffe was taken into custody in the early hours of Thursday morning, and was not charged with a crime. Kiro 7 suggests Cliffe will attend a bail hearing on Friday afternoon, though Kotaku reports that he was denied bail.
Police did not say if an actual child was harmed, writes Kiro 7, while Valve told Kotaku Cliffe has been suspended while it awaits more information.
A Valve spokesperson told Kotaku: "We are still learning details of what actually happened. Reports suggest he has been arrested for a felony offense. As such we have suspended his employment until we know more."
Cliffe co-created Counter-Strike as a Half-Life mod alongside Minh "Gooseman" Le in 1999. Valve thereafter bought the rights to the FPS, which has since become one of the most popular multiplayer shooters of all time.

ong Gone Days is a modern military RPG which developer Bura describes as an eclectic mix of visual novels and shooters. It will launch on Steam Early Access in March and fully release later this year, and it already has a free Steam demo you can try.
Starring Rourke, a soldier who deserts the military after learning "the awful truth about the operation he's part of," Long Gone Days tells a story of inescapable war, Bura says. It's set in the underground city of Kaliningrad and features an intriguing mix of game modes.
Combat, for example, comes in two forms: first-person turn-based combat where you build and command your party, and a sniper mode where you hunt find-it-style for targets. Bura says there are "no random encounters or grinding," which sounds like a nice departure from turn-based norms. Similarly, rather than tanks or mages or other fantasy classes, you have medics and translators.
Then there's morale, which is determined by your dialogue choices and affects your allies' combat effectiveness. Expanding the morale system was one of many reasons Long Gone Days is now slated for later this year rather than, say, now, according to Bura. In a post to its Tumblr dev blog, the studio said delaying the game also allowed it to double the main story's length, broaden dialogue choices and rework fundamentals like UI.

Originally scheduled to release mid-year, Red Dead Redemption 2 will now launch on October 26 – but it's still only confirmed for PS4 and Xbox One. The news came today via an official Rockstar statement along with a handful of new screenshots.
"We apologize to everyone disappointed by this delay," the statement reads. "While we had hoped to have the game out sooner, we require a little extra time for polish. We sincerely thank you for your patience and hope that when you get to play the game, you will agree the wait will have been worth it."
If a PC release does get announced at some point, I'd speculate that it won't release on PC this October. The PC version of GTA 5 didn't come until after two consecutive console generation releases, but when it did, it did so with new features. I remain confident it will make the leap eventually, given Rockstar and Take-Two's success with GTA Online.

The Forest, one of many survival games to hit Steam's Early Access over the past four years, will launch into 1.0 this April. The announcement was made in a new Steam Community post, where studio Endlight Games also outlined what the launch will entail.
First of all, the current price of $14.99 will rise to $19.99, so for those eager to make the most of that five dollar difference, now's probably the time. In addition to simply launching, the game will get official controller support (useful, since the game is coming to PS4 this year as well). As far as game improvements go, "new reasons and resources" for killing the game's ubiquitous AI foes, the creepies, will be implemented.
Elsewhere the cold and warmth system will be addressed, most notably with a new warm suit. New buildables are incoming, as well as performance optimizations for both "late game saves" and "multiplayer save games". On the topic of multiplayer, the clothing system will be "improved and expanded with a new system to allow you to switch outfits."
Finally, there will more details regarding a VR game mode "closer to release", as well as more information on other changes, additions and improvements.
The Forest is a survival game about surviving a passenger jet crash and, as you'd expect, fending off diabolical zombie-like creatures on a mysterious forest-coated island. For mine, it's among the most fun of the survival games out there at present.

When games use puns in their titles, it makes telling opening paragraph jokes that bit harder. Harder. Like a rock. Urgh, see what I mean? Anyway, Rock of Ages 2: Bigger & Boulder is free to try this weekend on Steam, and is half price from now through Monday, February 5.
RoA 2 is a tower defence-meets-strategy-meets-racing game mashup, and is the sequel to 2011's Rock of Ages. Tom Hatfield enjoyed the latter way back when, upon which last year's well-received follow-up duly improved. Expect destructible environments, smiley-faced rocks, and Monty Python's Flying Circus-esque artwork aplenty.

Since its full release late last year, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corp has sought to boost game performance and come down hard on cheaters. With the latter in mind, an early version of a "new anti-cheat solution"—which was hinted at last week—will roll out on live servers next week. A new update explains what it's all about.

If your idea of That Friday Feeling is less drinks after work, and more hours spent cursing at your monitor because the bonfire in Blighttown ain't where it's supposed to be, then, gosh, do I have a mod for you. FTRicher's Dark Souls—Prepare to Die Again relocates the base game's enemies, NPCs, bonfires, and more, adding new challenges to the game that's already notoriously challenging.
Inspired by Wulf2K's MSB-Edit-Tool and Meowmaritus' ParamVessel, Prepare to Die Again aims to recapture the excitement of that first trip/nerve-shattering descent into Lordran—where everything was new and unknown and scary. Going one step further than the likes of gumbenzoin's Enemy Placement mod, FTRicher's work in turn gives Miyazaki's nightmarescape the snow globe treatment, while staying lore-friendly along the way.
"This mod does not add enemies to zones where it would not make sense lore-wise," explains the mod's creator. "For example: No Darkwraiths in Anor Londo or Stone Knights in Undead Parish. I even tried to extend the lore as much as I could by adding or changing some NPCs in zones where I thought it would make sense."
Speaking to the latter, without spoiling too much, the mod lets you fight Iron Tarkus in Anor Londo instead of Sen's Fortress, for example. Online multiplayer should work as normal too, notes FTRicher, assuming your buddy also has the mod installed.
Full details of Prepare to Die Again's nips and tucks can be found over here, however the thought of non-warpable bonfire positions being juggled positively terrifies me. We really should update Jack Yarwood's mod-flavoured guide to making The Hard Game even harder.

"This solution will complement the systems that have been developed and implemented already," reads this Steam Community post, written by Dohyung Lee, the dev's head of service management and anti-cheat. "Its main focus for now is blocking unauthorized programs but it will be further developed to broaden the scope of its abilities."
In doing so, helper programmes which might alter the game's graphics or "aid gameplay in some way" will be blocked; so too could programmes that behave like cheat applications, even if they don't give users an unfair advantage.
Admittedly, I've only come across obvious cheaters on a couple of occasions—once by way of auto-aim, and another who I'm certain used a visibility-through-walls exploit—however the game's subreddit is filled with disgruntled players who claim to have suffered at the hands of those breaking the rules.
To this end, PUBG Corp has banned upwards of 1.5 million cheaters since its Early Access arrival last year—and has even reported taking down 100,000 rule breakers in a "single wave".

Destiny 2 update 1.1.2 went live earlier this week, as did a "development roadmap" detailing Bungie's plans for the game over the next few months. Included on that map was a promise of changes to come to the Sandbox, which is Bungie parlance for the way weapons, abilities and your character all interact.
In an update posted today, design lead Josh Hamrick revealed some of the Sandbox changes that are currently being tested for what the development team is now referring to as the "Go Fast Update." The idea, he said, is to enable more "hero moments" by making players faster and stronger, and boosting the effectiveness of Power weapons.
Supers (ie your ult) will also recharge faster, while Arcstriders, Sentinels, and Strikers will all move faster while their Supers are active. Weapon types including Hand Cannons, Pulse Rifles, Sniper Rifles, and Shotguns are all being buffed ("A key goal here is to make Shotguns, Snipers, and Fusion rifles more prevalent in the game," Hamrick said), and the ground speed cap has been increased for everyone.
PvP play is also being tweaked up to increase the pace of combat and the frequency of Power weapon use: Power ammo timers have been decreased, players will now drop power ammo when they die, and ammo counts have been adjusted "in relation to these timers, and in relation to weapon type."
Speaking of Power weapons, Bungie has also discovered a bug in sniper rifles that's actually preventing the team from properly adjusting the flinch on them. "While the current batch of changes we are playtesting go a long way to bringing snipers back to where they should be, this bug will still prevent them from feeling perfect. That bug, which we are actively working on fixing, requires some deep changes to the art of each of the individual snipers in the game," Hamrick explained. "That will take us a while to stomp out. We’ll get it fixed and pushed out to you as soon as we possibly can."
The changes currently being tested may not all make it to the next Sandbox update, "but the outlook is good at this point," Hamrick said. And they do sound promising overall, although my eyebrows raise at the thought of more Power ammo floating around in PvP. Rocket launchers and fusion rifles are one thing, but swords are already wildly overpowered, and the last thing anyone needs is for them to become even easier to wave around.

Total War's first Saga outing, Thrones of Britannia, makes significant changes to the Total War formula. That's according to strategy expert Tom, whose in-depth preview prepares us for some distinct design experimentation in the offshoot series' debut venture.
From a technical standpoint, we already know Thrones' historical map stretches 23-times further than that of main series forerunner Attila. But the question is: how will your system cope in the face of all of this game's new gubbins?
Creative Assembly and Sega have now revealed the recommended and minimum system requirements you'll need to power Saga's Viking Invasion of Britain:
Alfred the Great
OS: Windows 7 / 8 (8.1)/ 10 64Bit
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4570 3.20GHz
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 4GB | AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB @1080p
Storage: 60 GB available space
Alfred derate
OS: Windows 7 64Bit
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 3.0Ghz
Memory: 5 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 460 1GB | AMD Radeon HD 5770 1GB | Intel HD4000 @720p
Storage: 60 GB available space
Join the King of Wessex in the battle of Edington when Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia arrives on April 19, 2018. If preorders are your thing, know that they run from today through launch and that developer Creative Assembly will donate 25 percent of its profit from every pre-sale to the War Child UK charity.

Introduzione
