Whatever you do, don't compare Waverly Labs' Pilot to the Babelfish from Douglas Adams' novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Although you stick both in your ear to follow what's being said in a foreign language, that's where the similarity ends.

A fairer comparison might be the translator earpiece in Bruce Sterling's 1996 cyberpunk novel Holy Fire. That literary device, at least, is electronic, not organic, and runs sophisticated software to do its job.

Pilot is a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that you connect to your smartphone to listen to music or make and take calls. The earbuds have a four-hour battery life, and their carrying case doubles as a charger: Its integrated battery is good for four recharges.

Flutter, Google’s UI framework for building native interfaces for Android and iOS mobile applications, has just moved to its first beta release.

With the open source Flutter, you build applications and interfaces via a single code base that compiles directly to native ARM code.

    Where to download Flutter

You can download the Flutter framework from the Flutter webpage.

Flutter features: What’s new in Flutter

The applications can use the device’s GPU and access platform APIs and services. Also, its stateful hot reload capability allows for quick code changes, with results of changes viewed quickly without losing application state.

Other highlights of the framework include:

    A set of interactive widgets.

Integration with other development tools so developers can use their familiar editor or IDE. Android Studio, and Visual Studio Code are supported.

Widgets, rendering, and gestures are moved into the framework, providing control over pixels and offering the ability to build custom designs.

Platform conventions are followed, such as scrolling, navigation, and fonts.

Existing code written in Java and Kotlin for Android applications, and in Objective-C and Swift for iOS applications, can be reused with the framework. Since its alpha release last year, Flutter has added iPhone X and iOS 11 support, along with inline video and additional image formats. The framework also works with a beta of Google’s Dart 2 language.

New betas of Flutter are expected roughly every four weeks. The Flutter framework project is not related to Google’s 2013 purchase of the gesture recognition startup of the same name.

Flutter roadmap: What’s next for Flutter

The roadmap for Flutter includes capabilities such as:

embedding of Flutter screens into existing applications

improved APis for routing and navigation

additional support for Google’s Firebase development platform

    inline maps

The Google Go language (Golang), the popular open source systems-level programming language, is gaining more of a foothold in the workplace, according to the Go 2017 User Survey. More respondents (67 percent) said they were being paid to write Go than those who said they write Go code outside of work (63 percent).

Also, the number of respondents who strongly agreed with the notion that Go was critical to their company’s success rose to 17 percent, up from year 12 percent in the 2016 survey.

[ Also on InfoWorld: 6 best JavaScript IDEs and 10 best JavaScript editors. | Keep up with hot topics in programming with InfoWorld’s App Dev Report newsletter. ]

The survey attracted 6,173 respondents, 70 percent more than the 3,595 people polled in the 2016 survey. In other findings:

The top use of Go is now writing API/RPC services, with 65 percent reporting using the language for this. API/RPC services takes over the top spot from writing CLI tools, a use cited by 63 percent of respondents. Following these two uses were web services (49 percent), agents and daemons (44 percent), and libraries or frameworks (38 percent).

61 percent of respondents work in web development while 37 percent work in systems programming. Following these were devops (36 percent), network programming (32 percent), and databases (28 percent).

64 percent said they develop with Go on the Linux OS, followed by MacOS (49 percent) and Windows (18 percent).

27 percent had used Go for two to four years, while 26 percent had used it for three to 12 months. 21 percent had used it for 13 months to two years and 13 percent had used it for more than four years. Curiously, 2 percent had never used it.

The 2018 roadmap for Angular, Google’s mobile and web development framework, includes integration with the Bazel build tool.

Bazel is an open source, multilanguage tool for building and testing software that supports multiple languages. Angular itself is now being built using the tool, and some early adopters have used it with Angular apps. Bazel’s tool chain enables development from many teams under a single build, for quicker integration, Google said. The tool also offers local and distributed caching and parallel execution.

    Other features planned for Angular

    Also on Angular’s roadmap:

    • The Ivy renderer, intended to make it easier to debug with Angular while also offering size and compilation benefits. The renderer is slated to be part of Angular 6, due in March.

    • Component Dev Kit, offering tools for adding common interaction patterns. Developers can use the kit for tasks such as authoring a reusable component library or building domain-specific components. The kit is broken up into subpackages including accessibility, bidirectional text, overlay, and layout. Also, a table subpackage features an unopinionated data table with an API, dynamic columns, and a DOM structure.

    • ng update, which automatically updates project dependencies and performs automated version fixes. It is shipping in the beta release of Angular CLI 1.7.

    • Angular Elements, for publishing Angular components as custom elements.  While still in development, this capability is being used in the Angular.io web page to make it easier to do dynamic rendering.

    What’s new in Ruby 2.6
    Reply in IT news

Ruby, one of the more venerable dynamic languages, now has available the first beta release of Version 2.6.

What’s new in the Ruby 2.6 beta

Ruby 2.6.0’s first beta is now available, featuring what its creators describe as a unique twist in just-in-time compilation: The implementation prints the C code to disk and a C compiler process is produced to generate native code.

[ Go deeper at InfoWorld: Beyond jQuery: An expert guide to JavaScript frameworks • The complete guide to Node.js frameworks • The 10 essential JavaScript developer tools • The 6 best JavaScript IDEs and 10 best JavaScript editors. | Keep up with hot topics in programming with InfoWorld’s App Dev Report newsletter. ]
This first beta provides just the infrastructure for just-in-time compilation, with very few optimizations. The Ruby team is verifying compiler compatibility with various platforms and  trying to find security risks before the production release of Ruby 2.6. In the beta, just-in-time compilation is supported only when a Ruby app is built by the GCC compiler or Clang and the compiler is available at runtime. Plans call for implementing method inlining in the compiler, to significantly increase performance. Support for Microsoft’s Visual Studio IDE is planned as well.

Other features in the beta include:

    • In a change to the language, $SAFE is a process global state and 0 can be set again.

    • Improved performance of block-passing and passed block calling.

    • Proc#call has been sped up.

    • The bytes method has been added.

    What’s new in Ruby 2.5

Arriving on Christmas Day 2017, Ruby 2.5.0 is the first stable release in the 2.5 series.

It boosts performance by 5 to 10 percent by removing trace instructions from bytecode that has been found to be overhead. A dynamic instrumentation technique is used instead. Also, block passing by a block parameter has been made three times faster than it was in Ruby 2.4, through use of the Lazy Proc allocation technique.

Other features that improve performance include:

    • Document generation has been boosted by switching from the legacy lexical analyzer from IRB to Ripper.

    • The Mutex class has been rewritten to make it smaller and faster. Mutexcan be used to manage access to shared data from concurrent threads.

    • ERB generates code from a template at twice the speed as version 2.4.

    • Performance has been improved in built-in methods including Array#concat, Enumerable#sort_by, and String#concat.

Other improvements in Ruby 2.5 include:

    • Struct/new can create classes that accept keyword arguments.

    • Do/end blocks will now work directly with ensure/rescue/else.

    • The pp.rb library loads automatically.

    • An option has been added to print backtrace in reverse order. The intent is to get the main error message without needing to scroll.

    • To improve testing, support is offered for branch and method coverage measurement. Branch coverage reveals which branches are executed, while method coverage indicates which methods are invoked.

Ruby 2.5 also features a bug fix in which the SecureRandom library, for generating random numbers, which now prefers OS-provided sources over OpenSSL. Also, standard libraries such as cmath, csv, date, dbm, and ipaddr have been promoted to gems.
